About Prague
During centuries Prague has obtained a number of symbolic names – Prague, the city of a hundred spires; Prague, the heart of Europe; golden Prague; magical Prague or Praga caput regni (Prague, head of the kingdom). Prague has always played major role not only in the history of the Czech nation but also in the history of Europe. After decades closed behind the iron curtain, its glory and pan-European significance is coming back. The first half of 2009 as the term of the first Czech Presidency of the European Union offers to Prague an opportunity to become one of most important capitals in Europe.
Prague represents a unique complex of historical monuments and a demonstration of all artistic styles dominated by Prague Castle. The historical heart of the city spreads across both banks of the river Vltava and consists of six quarters, formerly independent towns, put together in the 18th century. Those are: Old Town, Josefov, New Town, Lesser Town, Hradčany, and Vyšehrad. The majority of ancient monuments, museums, and galleries are concentrated here. On the whole, there are almost fourteen hundred immovable monuments. The capital city of Prague is the most significant urban conservation area in the Czech Republic. Since 1992 the historical heart of Prague covering an area of 866 hectares has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. For more information not only about the monuments but also about the cultural events and everyday life see Prague Information Service.
